Physics Numericals Are a Pacing Problem, Not a Physics One

Physics is 36 of 180 marks, but it routinely costs candidates marks in Biology. The reason is time: a four-minute numerical on a one-minute-per-question paper is spending three other answers.

Physics is 20% of the paper. The complaint about it is almost never "I could not do them" — it is "I ran out of time." Those are different problems with different fixes, and treating a pacing problem as a content problem is why extra revision does not solve it.

MDCAT numericals are not FSc numericals

This is the single most useful thing to internalise, and it changes how you practise.

The order of operations under time

  1. Read what is being asked, and in what unit

    Then scan the options. If two are in the wrong unit or dimension, they are gone before you start.

  2. Check order of magnitude

    Rough out the scale mentally. Options thousands of times too large or small go next. Often you are down to two.

  3. Recall the formula — do not derive it

    If you are deriving under exam time, this question has already cost too much. Formula recall must be automatic, and that is a memorisation task to complete before the paper.

  4. Compute only if still ambiguous

    Frequently you will not need to. When you do, it is now a one-step calculation between two candidates.

  5. If it is not resolving in about a minute, mark and move

    Best guess between the survivors, flag it, go. There is no negative marking, so the guess is free and the delay is not.

How to practise so this holds on the day

The habits that transfer

  • Practise numericals with a timer, one minute each. Untimed practice trains a skill the paper does not test.
  • Make formula recall automatic — write the sheet from memory, repeatedly, until it is not a retrieval task.
  • Do unit-and-magnitude elimination deliberately on every practice question, even the ones you can solve. It has to be reflex.
  • Log which chapters your Physics errors cluster in. Errors concentrate far more tightly than people expect.
  • Work real past-paper numericals, not board-style problems. The step count and style differ.

How do I solve MDCAT physics numericals quickly?
Read what is asked and in what unit, then scan the options: wrong units or an impossible order of magnitude often eliminate two before any calculation. Recall the formula rather than deriving it, and compute only if the answer is still ambiguous. If it is not resolving in about a minute, mark your best guess between the survivors and move on.
How many physics questions are in MDCAT?
36 of the 180 questions, which is 20% of the paper. Biology is 81, Chemistry 45, and English and Logical Reasoning nine each.
Are MDCAT physics numericals harder than FSc ones?
Usually shorter, not harder. MDCAT numericals are typically one or two steps rather than the multi-stage problems board papers use, and the answer is already among four options, so you often need only to identify which is possible rather than compute the value. What is harder is the time: about one minute per question with no partial credit.
Why does physics cost me marks in other MDCAT sections?
Because time borrowed from the Physics budget is taken from elsewhere. Six numericals at four minutes each consumes 24 minutes against a budget of six, and the missing eighteen minutes usually come out of Biology, which is 81 of 180 marks. It presents as a Biology score but it is a Physics pacing problem.
In what order should I attempt MDCAT sections?
A common approach is English and Logical Reasoning first, since they are 18 marks and mostly take under a minute, then Biology at 81 marks, then Chemistry, then Physics theory, with numericals last. That way the questions most likely to consume several minutes each are spending time you have already banked marks against.
