MDCAT Merit List: How It Is Built and Why Your Position Moves

Most candidates picture a merit list as a leaderboard of MDCAT scores. It is not. It is a ranking of weighted merit aggregates, and MDCAT contributes only half of that number.

The single most misunderstood part of the process: a first merit list is a selection list, not a final one. Every cycle, a share of selected candidates does not take the seat, and everyone below them moves up.

   First selection list published

   Candidates are offered seats in aggregate order, subject to their stated college preferences and seat category.

   Some offers are not taken up

   Candidates accept a seat elsewhere, are admitted in another province, choose a private college, take a NUMS or overseas offer, or simply do not deposit the fee in time.

   Seats return to the pool

   Each declined seat is offered to the next eligible candidate in aggregate order.

   Subsequent lists are published

   This repeats through the admission rounds. Your position improves at every stage without your aggregate changing at all.

   Admissions close

   The aggregate of the last candidate admitted becomes that college's closing merit for the cycle — a figure that could not have been known in advance.

"What is the closing merit of King Edward?" is a question about the past, not about the future. Closing merit is not a rule that admissions apply — it is simply the aggregate of the last person who got in, discovered after everyone got in.

A single college does not have one merit list. It has several, and they close at different points, so "the merit of X college" is an incomplete question.

   Compare it against a labelled table

   Not against a screenshot with no stated basis. Check what cycle, what seat category and what list stage the figures come from.

   Allow a margin in both directions

   Closing merits moved 1–2.5 points between recent Punjab cycles. Treat a match as 'in range', not as a guarantee.

   If you are close, work out the gap in marks

For Sindh, KPK, Balochistan and federal seats, the formula is the same national 10/40/50 but the seat pools, quotas and lists are provincial.
