Where 20 MDCAT Marks Actually Come From

Twenty marks is about 5.6 aggregate points — more than three times the spread of Punjab's entire public college range. Here is where those marks realistically sit, in order of how cheaply they can be recovered.

The short answer

  • 20 marks ≈ 5.6 aggregate points, against a Punjab public-college spread of just 1.66 points.
  • Blanks are the cheapest marks on the paper. No negative marking means every unanswered question is a guaranteed zero.
  • English and Logical Reasoning are 18 marks and the most commonly abandoned — a large share of a 20-mark gap can sit here alone.
  • Biology is 81 of 180. A percentage-point gain in Biology is worth more than the same gain anywhere else.
  • Misreading is not bad luck. For many candidates it is the single largest recoverable error class.
  • Find your own distribution first — sit a timed paper and log errors by chapter, or you are guessing at your own weaknesses.

What 20 marks is worth

Punjab's whole spread

This is the reason the question is worth asking precisely. Twenty marks is not a marginal improvement — it moves you across the entire range of a province's public medical colleges more than three times over.

Where 20 marks realistically sit
SourceScaleCost to fix
BlanksEvery unanswered question is a certain zero. Twenty blanks is roughly five marks.Near zero. It is a rule, not a skill: fill every answer.
English + Logical Reasoning18 marks, and the two sections most candidates abandon.Low. Reasoning has no FSc textbook, so almost nobody has prepared it.
Misread questionsVaries, and is routinely dismissed as carelessness.Low. A mechanical reading habit fixes most of it.
Pacing losses at the endQuestions left unattempted or rushed in the last twenty minutes.Moderate. Fixed by full timed papers, not by more content.
One or two weak Biology chaptersBiology is 81 of 180. Errors cluster tightly.Moderate. Targeted chapter drilling, not a full re-read.
Broad content gapsThe real thing, when it is the real thing.High. Weeks of work, and the honest answer for some candidates.

Ordered by cost, not by size. The first three rows are where a 20-mark gap most often turns out to be hiding, and they are the ones candidates skip because they do not feel like studying.

The three cheapest, in detail

  1. Never leave a blank — this is free

There is no negative marking. A guess has a positive expected value and a blank has none. Reserve the last two minutes of the paper for filling every remaining answer rather than solving one more question properly.

  2. Take the 18 abandoned marks

English and Logical Reasoning are 5% each. Reasoning in particular has no FSc textbook, so you are competing against candidates who have done nothing at all — the argument in full.

  3. Fix reading discipline

Read the final line of every question twice before looking at the options. If several of your errors were misreadings rather than gaps, no amount of extra revision addresses them — but this does.

The method that converts effort into marks

  1. Baseline

One full past paper, timed, cold, no notes. Uncomfortable and necessary.

  2. Log errors by chapter and by type

Three types: did not know, knew but misread, ran out of time. They need completely different fixes and lumping them together is why people plateau.

  3. Count lucky guesses as errors

A question you got right without being sure is a mark you do not own. It will not repeat under pressure.

  4. Drill the largest cluster only

Two or three chapters usually account for a large share of lost marks. Chapter-wise practice groups past-paper questions this way.

  5. Re-sit and compare

Same conditions, four weeks later. If the number has not moved, the method is wrong — and you have found out with time left to change it.

Find your own 20 marks

Sit a full timed paper, then drill the chapters your errors cluster in — each question with a written explanation for why the other options are wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How can I improve my MDCAT score by 20 marks?
Start by locating where your marks are actually going: sit one full paper timed and cold, then log every error by chapter and by failure type. In practice a large share of a 20-mark gap sits in blanks, in the 18 abandoned English and Logical Reasoning marks, and in misread questions - all of which are cheaper to fix than broad content gaps.
How much difference does 20 MDCAT marks make to merit?
About 5.6 aggregate points, since one mark is roughly 0.28 points. For scale, the entire spread between the highest and lowest Punjab public medical college in the 2024-25 cycle was 1.66 aggregate points, so a 20-mark gain covers that range more than three times over.
Which subject should I focus on to improve my MDCAT score?
Weight time to the marks: Biology is 81 of 180 questions, Chemistry 45 and Physics 36. An hour on Biology is structurally worth more than an hour on Physics. But confirm against your own error log first, because the most common failure is spending more time on the subject that already feels comfortable.
Does guessing help in MDCAT?
Yes. There is no negative marking, so a wrong answer scores the same as a blank while a guess has a positive expected value. Twenty blanks is roughly five marks, about 1.4 aggregate points. Reserve the final two minutes to fill every remaining answer rather than solving one more question properly.
Are English and Logical Reasoning worth the time?
They are 18 of 180 marks, worth about 2.5 aggregate points - more than the entire 1.66-point spread of Punjab's public colleges. Logical Reasoning has no FSc textbook, so most candidates have never practised the question types, which makes it the cheapest marks per hour on the paper.
